A letter from The Chaplain – January 2013

The Magdalen Chapel, Bath

30th January 2013.

From the Chaplain…..

Dear members and Friends of Magdalen Chapel,

Since I last wrote, friends, members and visitors at the Chapel have met for the special events of the Carol Service, and Christmas Services, as well as for the week-by-week privilege of celebrating the holy mysteries of our salvation; as every Sunday we gather together as God’s Eucharistic people. The Christian Calendar leads us now through the season of Lent, a time for the preparing of the ground by God’s grace, the sowing of seeds of faith, and nourishing new shoots of discipleship. On Ash Wednesday we are reminded of the “forty days and forty nights” of Our Lord’s wilderness testing; which was the preparation for His three-year life-giving incarnate ministry. For us, Lent leads us wonderfully into the Salvation Drama of Holy Week and Easter. See how the first disciples’ lives were tested, changed, and renewed: as you walk with Christ so will yours.

We live, as ever, in times of change and new opportunity. As Cardinal Newman reminds us, “to live is to change, and to be perfect is to have changed often.” I note later in detail the changes of personnel at the chapel; Naomi Floyd joins the Chapel Committee as Assistant Warden, and with and the impending Sabbatical Year for Organist Robert Anderson, the current members of the Promotions Committee are bowing out after 4 years planning concerts and other events. Don’t all rush at once: you will have ample opportunity to dream-up, organise, and enjoy social and cultural activities based on the Chapel.  Remember, ideas and discussion about such events often begins at Coffee on Sunday mornings after the 10.30am Eucharist– that is where the “movers and shakers” are to be found, after worshipping together.

As the days lengthen and the mornings get lighter, there is also a plan afoot to encourage a measured time of choral preparation before the Eucharist with the encouragement of our Jules, leading our band of Organists from Easter. Do step forward – or even leave a “note” so we can keep you in touch. We look forward to welcoming the Chandos Singers and others in due course.

Thank you for your prayers and good wishes during my recent invalidity – our thanks also to Locum clergy who have ministered on those three Sundays.

With prayers and blessings,

You will be welcome………

For the Record

Chapel Wardens, Farewell and Welcome

On Sunday 25th November after the Sung Eucharist, we said “Thank you” to Alice Peterson – who was unfortunately prevented from being there, at the last minute – for all she did for the Chapel as Chapel Warden, and Sacristan, and a Token value £60 was subsequently presented to her at home.

The meeting heartily endorsed the appointment of Naomi Floyd as (Assistant) Warden to help Nic Eager. We are grateful to Naomi, for taking on Warden’s duties on Sundays particularly, and  for her already valuable contribution as a member of the Chapel Committee, with Nic, Geoff Lee (Treasurer) and the Chaplain.

Sunday 16th December – a special “Photo Session”, sponsored by Geoff Lee, took place in the Chapel, after the Sung Eucharist.  We look forward to seeing the photos in due course.

“In quires and places where they sing” (as the Prayer Book Evening Prayer Rubric says)

We say “thank-you” to the retiring members of the Promotions Committee for their efforts over the past 4 years to promote musical events and Choral Services in the Chapel, culminating in the Carol Service during December. Robert and Debra Anderson, Jules Addison, and Jane Warren have promoted Concerts (particularly during the July Magdalen Festival Week) and Choral Services, that have attracted many friends and visitors to the chapel.  A total of £1,563.96 is in the Friends of the Magdalen Chapel Account as a result of their stalwart efforts.

After 14 years as Chapel Organist, Robert, and Debra, Secretary of the Committee are planning a Sabbatical Year, after Easter, and the focus and work of the Committee will re-emerge in various different ways.

Jules has kindly agreed to co-ordinate and encourage Choral Services, beginning with the Easter Vigil Service  at 7pm (31st March). Please talk to Jules if you would like to be involved.

We are also indebted to Dr Malcolm Hill and Patrick Hutton for their ongoing willing offering of musical encouragement at the Chapel, and to Malcolm also as Director of our friends the Chandos Singers.

On Sundays, in due course, there will be opportunity for a short “practice” at 10am, with the Organist of the day so if you’d like to make the most of singing the Eucharist, please be there to join in. You might even initial the Calendar in the Chapel to show your availability, week by week.

From time to time we look forward to inviting visiting Choirs, to Services and for Concerts.
