The Magdalen Chapel, Bath
18th May 2013.
From the Chaplain…..
Dear members and Friends of Magdalen Chapel,
HOW TIME FLIES! My last letter was full of “Holy Week” and “Easter” events, including the Clock-change to British Summer-time.
The Chapel Annual Meeting after Easter was a most encouraging event, with a good attendance and positive feedback and suggestions. The Accounts for 2012 were received with thanks to Hon. Treas. Mr Geoff Lee, and we are hoping to “restore” the Garden gate based on the ancient print in the book “Spirit of Care” (copies of which are available at the Chapel), thanks to Valerie’s research. We are also embarking on a survey entitled “Why are we here?” for the attention of the Congregation members in the first instance.
With the encouragement of the brighter mornings, we are responding to a suggestion made at the Aforesaid Annual Meeting that we should make an earlier start with our Sunday Sung Eucharist: from 2nd June we shall start at 10am. If you would like an alarm call, you could always ask… I know it will mean adjusting dog-walking and other little treats, but I hope this opportunity will be a positive option for you all.
Details of our celebrations for the Annual Festival of St Mary Magdalen in July are listed overleaf. We look forward to seeing friends and neighbours, as ever,
We congratulate St John’s Hospital (our “big sister” charity) on being nominated – by Chairman of B&NES Neil Butters as one of his Charities for the Year, and we’ll hope to bask in the reflected glory!
With prayers and blessings,
Sincerely, David

FRANCIS YOUNGHUSBAND: EXPLORER AND MYSTIC
A Talk on Wednesday 5 June at Manvers Street Baptist Church 7.30pm
Bath Interfaith Group is holding a special meeting to mark the 150th anniversary of Sir Francis Younghusband, Founder of the World Congress of Faiths, who spent much of his childhood in Bath and was educated at Clifton College in Bristol.
A talk about Younghusband’s life will be given by Rev Dr Marcus Braybrooke, who is President of the World Congress of Faiths. Marcus is a former Vicar of Swainswick, Minister of Christ Church, Julian Road, and sometime Chaplain of Magdalen Chapel. His wife Mary was a magistrate and social worker.
Francis Younghusband, was a remarkable character. He was an explorer; served in the army; was the first Europeans to cross the Gobi desert; explored dangerous mountain passes in the Himalayas; led a controversial military mission to Tibet; and was a journalist and author.
Younghusband was also a spiritual explorer. His mystical experiences and friendships with people of different faiths and races convinced him that there is truth in all religions. This led him to found the World Congress of Faiths in 1936, as a fellowship for people of different faiths. He was convinced that the ethical teaching of the worlds’ religions was the only basis for lasting peace.
The evening will also mark the launch of Marcus Braybrooke’s new book Widening Vision: The World Congress of Faiths and the Growing Interfaith Movement (available from www.lulu.com)
About the Chapel History, A Message received from Tom Colville….
In my research as a historian I believe I have come across a record of this Church. It came up in a document called ‘Athenae Oxonienses an exact history of all the writers and bishops who have had their education in the most ancient and famous University of Oxford, from the fifteenth year of King Henry the Seventh, Dom. 1500, to the end of the year 1690’. In the record for 1504 it says: ‘As for John Cantlow beforementioned, who was his Predecessor, and graduated in this University, he built in a certain Village near Bathe, called Holloway, in the Parish of Widcomb, a pretty little Chappel dedicated to S Mary Magd. as also, as ’tis said there, the little Hospital adjoyning for Lunaticks.’ If that information is of any interest, or if I can help to furnish you with any further details, do not hesitate to get in touch. Best wishes, Tom Colville t.m.colville@warwick.ac.uk
